California exodus of home insurance companies continues Los Angeles Times

house insurance in california

California has cheap homeowners insurance rates, averaging just $1,094 per year for $250K in dwelling coverage. By law, your homeowners insurance company must offer you earthquake insurance, but you can refuse coverage. The cost of earthquake insurance depends on various factors, like whether your home meets the latest earthquake codes, the proximity to a fault line and the cost of rebuilding the house. Your home insurance company can provide a quote if you want to add this coverage to your policy.

Flood insurance is a separate policy with additional protection to a homeowners policy, protecting you from more severe types of water damage like heavy rain, melting snow, or severe coastal storms. Get your car insurance and your homeowners insurance policy together from GEICO to receive a reduced rate on your vehicle insurance. Home insurance protects one of your most important investments and offers protection for you from accidents in your home or on your property. The underlying problem is that disasters happen in California — at an increasing rate thanks to climate change — and that homes are at risk. They’re in the middle of the woods, or surrounded by flammable grasslands, or on the edge of bluffs that are expected to erode. Making homes less likely to burn, flood or collapse would be good for homeowners and would also make California feel less risky to insurers.

Common insurance risks for California homeowners

State Farm, for example, announced in March it would not renew 72,000 policies. But new home buyers could be forced to pay more, regardless of their home’s proximity to wildfire dangers. Before State Farm’s announcement, the company requested a 28% rate hike on homeowners’ insurance; Allstate has filed for a 39.6% increase. The average California homeowner’s annual insurance premium is $1,300, compared with more than $2,000 in other states with wildfire risk and $4,000 in hurricane-prone Florida, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

Home-based business

Farmers is the second largest home insurance company in California, followed by CSAA. This coverage pays to repair damage to the structure of your house, unless it’s listed as an exclusion. It’s recommended that you have enough dwelling coverage to rebuild your house from the ground up after a covered disaster.

Best home insurance discounts in California

When a company tries to justify rate changes, it is required to rely on past losses to project future losses. It can’t use factors like the locations of new homes it is covering — whether they’re in downtown San Francisco or rural wine country — or the increased risk of wildfires due to climate change. Some homeowners prioritize customer service and claims experience over affordability.

For example, the Home Sharing Coverage is a great option for those renting out a room or their entire home as it protects the homeowners and guests. State Farm offers unique coverages that policyholders may add to their plans. You can get additional protection against the cost to repair or replace certain service lines, which is not available with all insurers. You can also get additional protection against expenses due to damages caused by an earthquake or volcanic explosion. Keep in mind, however, that these are not necessarily all of what’s included in a California homeowners insurance policy, or it’s possible that certain policies have more exclusions. Note that some perils are generally always excluded, such as earthquakes.

Otherwise, it’s up to you to evaluate your risk and decide how much coverage, if any, to purchase. Keep in mind that federal flood maps don’t always provide an up-to-date or comprehensive assessment of your home’s flood risks. More than 100 insurance companies still offer coverage, but major mid-market insurers like State Farm and Allstate have stopped issuing new coverage and are only renewing existing policies. Farmers has also limited how many new policies it will write in California. If you cannot secure insurance for your home, you may want to consider the California Fair Plan, which provides coverage for homes considered high-risk.

Our proprietary rating methodology takes multiple factors into account, including customer satisfaction, cost, financial strength, and policy offerings. Based on Policygenius' analysis of the most widely available insurance companies in the state, Nationwide, Farmers, Travelers, AAA, and Bamboo Insurance are California's best homeowners insurance companies in 2023. Another thing to remember about home insurance is “that insurance law is state law. That means that although your insurance policy is a contract between you and the insurance company, that contract is understood in the context of California statutory law and case law,” says Walker. Homeowners insurance isn’t a legal requirement in California, but your mortgage provider might mandate that you get a certain amount of home insurance.

When looking for the best homeowners insurance in California, it’s helpful to consider how these factors could affect your final premium. Bankrate’s insurance editorial team, which includes licensed insurance agents and industry professionals, can help you understand how to find proper insurance coverage in the Golden State. We assessed the average rates, coverage options, discounts, third-party scores and ratings, and digital tools of California home insurance companies to find the options that stand out. Even so, homeowners in California have special considerations to take into account when shopping for home insurance, like the state’s shrinking home insurance market, wildfires and earthquake coverage. California is known for its mountains, vast dry deserts, miles of picturesque coastline, and some of the most famous forests in the world.

Blueprint does not include all companies, products or offers that may be available to you within the market. Before panic-buying every home insurance endorsement your insurer offers, it’s helpful to first understand which disasters are specifically covered in your policy.

Your dwelling and other structures are typically insured on an “open peril” basis, meaning they are protected from everything except what is specifically excluded as outlined in your policy. Your personal property, however, is only protected from the losses, or “perils,” that are named in your policy. We're the only homeowners insurance company that lets you compare home insurance quotes and coverages from multiple providers. Simply enter your information once, and we'll match you with a policy based on your input and frequently show additional options. Your homeowners insurance premiums will vary depending on both your company and how much dwelling coverage you need to protect your home from serious weather damage. Your policy's dwelling coverage limit should be equal to your home’s replacement cost — not its market value.

Each category was assigned a different weight, adding to a score of 100. Allstate has rare optional coverages, including the HostAdvantage® Home-Sharing Insurance that protects homeowners renting out their homes. Allstate policyholders may access an energy efficiency upgrade, which pays for the additional cost to replace damaged covered items with more energy-efficient options. The company even offers significant discounts like the Claim Rateguard, which prevents premium increases due to the filing of claims. NerdWallet’s homeowners insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints, coverages, discounts and online experience.

The law has saved consumers tens of billions of dollars in reduced insurance rate hikes, according to the state’s insurance regulator. Regulation directs insurance companies to reward consumers who take wildfire mitigation actions under the state’s Safer from Wildfires framework. The above is meant as general information and as general policy descriptions to help you understand the different types of coverages. These descriptions do not refer to any specific contract of insurance and they do not modify any definitions, exclusions or any other provision expressly stated in any contracts of insurance. We encourage you to speak to your insurance representative and to read your policy contract to fully understand your coverages. Susman adds for the first time, insurers are using technology to predict fire risk and other data to calculate rates.

Among providers, Allstate offers the best homeowners insurance in California by balancing financial stability, customer service and claims experience. California homeowners insurance rates are the most expensive for ZIP code with an average annual cost of $2,087. Insurance.com's data analysis found that State Farm is the best home insurance company in California. At $886 a year on average, Allstate is the cheapest home insurance company in California. That's based on a policy with $300,000 in dwelling and liability coverage and a $1,000 deductible.

Roach said that the number of consumers the organization insures has more than doubled since 2019, covering around $320 billion of exposure. She said that the Fair Plan is now one of the top five insurers in California, covering just over 350,000 dwelling and commercial policies as of February this year. "This exponential growth that we're experiencing right now further complicates the situation," she said. "Our rates are going to go up, no question about it," she told the Little Hoover Commission, a state oversight committee, on Thursday. "If we can put net cost of reinsurance in there, if we can use catastrophe modelling just like the voluntary market, our rates are going to go up."

Now 62, Coulier has lent his voice to a handful of television shows and often takes his comedy on the road, stand-up style. "Full House" is Dave Coulier's most notable role, so it was no surprise to see him return for a handful of episodes of the spin-off. Sweetin has fewer acting credits to her name than some of her co-stars, as she spent time working toward becoming a drug and alcohol counselor. After reprising his role as Joey on Fuller House, he competed on Food Network's Worst Cooks in America. After Full House's conclusion, Coulier hosted America's Funniest People and Opportunity Knocks. He is also a successful voice actor with roles in Yogi Bear and the Magical Flight of the Spruce Goose and The Real Ghostbusters. In 2000, Coulier founded his own children's entertainment company, F3 Entertainment. In 2006, he appeared on Fox's reality show Skating With Celebrities.

"Acting was a really cool childhood hobby, and I got to experience amazing things," she said. So many of the original Full House cast came back to the Netflix series, including Candace Cameron Bure, who reprised her role as eldest daughter of 3 girls, DJ Tanner. Loughlin starred on the short-lived WB series "Summerland," with Jesse McCartney and then-unknown Zac Efron. She also played Debbie Wilson on the hit show "90210" for several years. Mary-Kate and Ashley even got to act with each other on a few episodes, like when they played cousins during season four. The twin sisters went on to release a number of successful straight-to-video movies (Passport to Paris, anyone?), star in two more TV shows and launch their own company, Dualstar, which they took over as joint CEOs in 2004.

“It doesn’t matter what gender, everyone’s in love with the Cat King,” she said. You might recognize Lukas Gage from Euphoria and The White Lotus. Set in the same universe as DC Comics’ The Sandman, the series follows the ghosts of Charles and Edwin, two boys who suffered terrible deaths at a British boarding school 70 years apart. Together, their ghosts solve supernatural mysteries that no one else can, but not without the help of psychic Crystal and her neighbor Niko.

Despite his air of authority, he stayed calm with his daughters and discussed matters with them so they always understood his reasoning. In 2004, Coulier moved into a house with a group of celebrities including Charo, Flavor Flav, Jordan Knight, Brigitte Nielsen, and Ryan Starr for Vh1's The Surreal Life. In the same interview, Barber reveled she has really enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom, living the childhood she never had. Although the twins first launched a clothing line at Walmart, their follow-up was much more high end, founding brands The Row in 2006, and Elizabeth & James in 2007. They've had such a big impact on the fashion world that in both 2012 and 2015, the sisters were named Womenswear Designers of The Year by The Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Though the show never garnered much critical acclaim, it was a hit with audiences and even more so in syndicated reruns. He continued to voice the iconic character in additional movies, TV shows, and video games. In addition to acting, Scott is also an accomplished TV writer. Scott returned to the role of Steve on Fuller House, and Steve and DJ ultimately got their happily ever after. After Full House ended, the Olsens enjoyed a lucrative career as child actors. In 1993, they founded Dualstar, the company that would produce all of their subsequent movies and videos. In 1995, the twins starred in their first feature film, It Takes Two.

Tanner-Fuller, a veterinarian and widowed mother of three sons, whose sister Stephanie and best friend Kimmy—along with her teenage daughter—live together at the Tanners' childhood home in San Francisco, California. The series followed the Tanner family and their San Francisco life. (Candace Cameron Bure), Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), and Michelle (Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen). It didn't take long for dad Danny, rock musician Jesse, stand-up comedian Joey, and the girls to become a tight-knit group.

Throughout the series, he fronted a band named Jesse and the Rippers and was the lead vocalist and guitarist. The band scored a record deal after the success of their hit single "Forever" (a Beach Boys cover). They then toured the country in local clubs during the summer.

Still a friend of many cast members (including Danielle Olivera and the Wirkus twins), his Instagram bio says that he's currently an event planner. In the show, Cameron Bure is the widowed mother of three sons and finds herself back in her childhood home alongside her sister Stephanie and her lifelong friend Kimmy Gibbler. Saget continued acting after Full House and went on to star in How I Met Your Mother, Entourage, and Benjamin before reprising his role in Fuller House. And as Dave himself puts it, this reunion will be one for the books since the cast are more than just co-stars—after all these years, they're practically family. Drew Weisholtz is a reporter for TODAY Digital, focusing on pop culture, nostalgia and trending stories. He has seen every episode of “Saved by the Bell” at least 50 times, longs to perfect the crane kick from “The Karate Kid” and performs stand-up comedy, while also cheering on the New York Yankees and New York Giants.

While it seems Netflix pulled the show due to poor viewership, Candace Cameron Bure is still on board to do more seasons if the opportunity presented itself. To help the passage of time sink in (because that’s always a fun reminder!), TVLine has put together a before-and-after gallery of Full House characters, showing just how much things have changed since 1987.

The two almost exclusively appeared together on-screen until giving up acting altogether and moving into the world of fashion design, where they still work today. Bure also served as a co-host on "The View" for two seasons, earning herself a Daytime Emmy nomination for each year. Prior to his untimely death, Bob was on a nationwide stand-up comedy tour. It was announced in January 2019 that Fuller House was not returning for season 6.

For the most part, the sitcom stars have remained extremely close through the years. Ever since Full House, John Stamos has been a force in Hollywood. He has appeared as both a series regular and guest star on many shows, including, 65 episodes of the hit drama, ER — the same show that put George Clooney on the map. After Full House ended, both sisters continued to act, co-starring in Two of a Kind from 1998 to 1999. They followed it up with several direct-to-video movies including Passport to Paris and Winning London.

After her Full House days were over, Cameron Bure continued acting and went on to become one of the biggest names in Hallmark history, starring in almost 30 films with the franchise. All seven of the original cast members remained with the show through its entire eight-year run, with five characters added to the main cast along the way. The 4-year-old is singing a Katy Perry song between takes at the Fuller House premiere episode live taping, earning a standing ovation from the star – and everyone else on stage 26. Tanner-Fuller gets help from her sister Stephanie and best friend Kimmy when the women move in with their families to help D.J.

But that's exactly what happened with Full House, which aired from 1987 to 1995. “I would love to stay in the [acting] business if it’s for the right reasons and the right show. 6 Reasons Your AC Smells Musty & How to Fix It

why does my house smell musty

If you notice mold growing on the walls or wallpaper, it’s best to try and clean it off as soon as you can. Murphy tells me that regular vacuuming and annual deep cleaning are critical to keeping a fresh scent. You may also want to consider having your carpet professionally cleaned.

How do I get the musty smell out of my air conditioner?

The best way to measure the effectiveness of your musty smell remediation efforts is to test the air quality in your home. Tests can identify contaminants like radon and formaldehyde, particulates like dust and pollen, and even VOCs (volatile organic compounds). All these can be harmful to your health, so if you suspect you have air quality issues, it’s important to act fast.

If you need some ideas to help you get started, check out Spring Cleaning – 6 Steps to a Clean and Organized Kitchen. 6 Ways to Get the Musty Smell Out of Clothes and Towels includes tips for dealing with musty closets. I think most of us have walked into a home where all you can smell are the pets. When you share your home with beasties, regular cleaning is a must. See “Best Odor Eliminators for the Refrigerator, Freezer and Carpets and More” for tips on dealing with musty carpets. Mold and mildew love to grow in those sweaty nooks and crannies of refrigerator and freezer door gaskets.

Causes of Musty Smell in Air Conditioners

Open windows and doors, turn on ceiling and attic fans, or add fans to each room. Starting your HVAC system can also help draw out odors and capture mold spores in the filters. Be sure that the system has clean filters and replace them often to help remove musty smells. It may also be a smart investment to purchase an air purifier if this is an ongoing issue or if anyone in your house struggles with allergies and stronger sensitivity to mold.

why does my house smell musty

If your house smells extra musty after a rain, it could be because water is getting into the house and causing mold to grow. Perform regular AC unit maintenance, including changing the air filters regularly. Experts recommend doing a deep clean at least once a year, but you can thoroughly clean your unit before each new season starts. With some care and attention, your AC unit will last for years, ensuring your home remains comfortable and safe.

Those musty smells must go somewhere, and for stale air to leave, new fresh air must enter. Musty smells are often created by dust and poor ventilation, once you get some fresh air in the house it should remove odors considerably. Open the curtains and blinds so as much fresh air comes in as possible. Open cupboards, cabinets, and drawers to air out these spaces as well.

What causes a musty smell in a house?

Keep closets, dresser drawers, basements — any place where mildew is likely to grow — as clean as possible. Soil on dirty articles can supply enough food for mildew to start growing when moisture and temperature are right. Greasy films, such as those that form on kitchen walls, also contain many nutrients for mildew-causing molds. Carpets and rugs trap all kinds of bacteria, eventually leading to strange smells if not cleaned regularly.

STEP 2: Scrub the mildewed area with diluted bleach.

If the smell is isolated to one room, it might be easier to treat the smell and cause. If the house is older and has been closed for a long time, musty smells should go away after you let fresh in and deep clean the place. If your finished basement smells musty, but you’re sure there are no leaks behind the walls, the odor could be coming from a dry floor drain or p-trap under a sink. Since these drains don’t see frequent use, the fluid in the trap that blocks sewer gasses can dry up. Pouring a few cups of water into these drains from time to time might make the difference, as they’re often the issue when a dry basement smells. Many things can cause a bad smell coming from the air conditioner.

While air ventilation systems work well to ensure that air is being circulated properly, it also causes some problems. For example, musty smells from another apartment can enter your unit through the vent. Since mold and mildew need moisture to thrive, lessening the humidity level in a home can help keep mildew under control.

Another possibility is that the air in the home went stale while you were away. The most common cause of a sudden musty smell in a house, especially in winter, is the development of mold and mildew, often caused by humid conditions and condensation. A musty smell, accompanied by dark discoloration on walls, furnishings, ceilings, or carpets can be the first sign of spores. Mold in the AC smells musty, with many homeowners describing it as like old socks, standing water, or garbage. In some extreme cases, mold in the AC might smell rotten, like a dead animal or spoiled hardboiled eggs.

For odor removal, open doors and windows and run ceiling fans or stationary fans as often as you can. You also can try covering carpets or upholstery with baking soda, allowing it to sit overnight and then vacuuming thoroughly. Always open windows and doors for ventilation while painting. You can call a plumber or appliance repair specialist to replace the rod, or give a go yourself.

Our guide will explain common reasons why a bad smell is emitting from your air conditioning system, how to troubleshoot and fix the issue, and when to get professional help. If you’ve ever been in an old attic that hasn’t been cleaned or aired out in a while, you’ve experienced a musty scent. It’s a very distinctive scent that most people immediately recognize. Even if you’re unsure exactly what a musty smell in your house is like, you’ve probably experienced the smell at some point in your life. Your HVAC air filter could be so dirty that it’s blowing musty smells into your home. The general rule of thumb is to change them out every 30 days, more in hotter and colder months, or whenever you notice your HVAC kicking into high gear.

You know that brand-new, citrus-kissed scent that greets you when you walk into the lobby of a luxury hotel? Do you ever wish your own living space could smell like that? You may fantasize about your home having a signature scent that makes it feel like a clean, safe sanctuary, but life (and reality) can sometimes get in the way. Place a fan near the pot of steaming lemon water to circulate the sweet fragrance all around the room. After the lemon water cools, you can bottle it up in a spray bottle and spritz it around as a natural air freshener.

Does Your Home Smell Funny? 12 Odors That Could Mean Big Trouble

If it dries up or the recycling goes on its way, not a problem. If it hangs out in your house too long, that's going to stink. Mildew is usually powdery or downy (think powdery mildew on plants). Reducing humidity can be done with a dehumidifier, but simply opening windows every morning for half an hour after you wake up can reduce humidity.

House Smells Musty – But No mold? 7 Main Reasons (Explained)

There are a variety of reasons why you might notice a musty odor from your cooling system. Here are the most common reasons why an unpleasant odor might come from your AC unit. To encourage more airflow and air out smells, turn on all ventilation fans in bathrooms, kitchens, etc. For rooms or areas of the house that do not have windows or ventilation fans, bring in electric fans and put them on full speed. If your home has a stale, musty scent, there could be a handful of explanations, including a plumbing leak, high humidity, poor airflow, dirty HVAC equipment, or soiled carpet.

Many front load washers retain a little water at the base of the unit. Over time, this water grows bacteria, leading to musty smells in your laundry area. The new unit has a small drain hose, and I clear the stale water out every couple weeks. If you own an older home, the chances are it’s going to have some kind of odor to it. That “old house” smell doesn’t have to be unpleasant, however.

Reasons Your Home Smells Musty—and How to Fix It

Inadequate airflow is another common reason a house smells musty, even without mold. If the mold area is larger than 10 square feet, you may need professional mold abatement. For small colonies of mildew on fabrics or walls, you can follow these tips to get the source of the musty smells under control.

Also, the next time you redo the paint on the walls in the bathroom or kitchen, use mold-inhibiting paints to keep the spores away. Once you've identified the source of the musty odor, it's time to get rid of it. For spot sources like plants, garbage cans and laundry, clean them up. If you find exterior leaks, get them repaired, and clean/remove/replace water damaged materials.

Keep in mind that a musty smell is an indication of a dirty house or poor ventilation. If they’re dirty, grimy, and dusty, they could emit poor-quality dirty air with a bad odor. Any dirt and spills not cleaned up properly can cause your house to have that unpleasant musty smell. If you or another household member smokes indoors, even if it’s only occasionally, then you may have found the culprit behind that old, musty smell inside the house. You can also use a more natural approach by spraying the area with distilled white vinegar. Allow the vinegar to work for an hour, and then scrub away the mildew with a sponge or microfiber cloth dipped in baking soda.

Most of the time, the smell is simply a symptom of the actual issue, which is mold or mildew caused by moisture. If you have musty odors in the kitchen, laundry room or bathrooms, improve ventilation. Switch it on when a shower starts, and it shuts off automatically.

Solved! What to Do When There’s Water in Your Crawl Space

Not only can dust and dirt hide in the tracks and the fibers, but the carpet itself also sucks up moisture in the air and moisture is what mold and bacteria need to thrive. If your clothes smell lovely and clean when you put them away or hang them up, but smell musty in a matter of only a week, you have an air ciculation problem. The solution can be to leave the drawers slightly open/wardrobe doors slightly ajar, although it's not the most aesthetically pleasing one. You can also buy some moisture absorbers made from silica and put them in your drawers/hang in the wardrobe. Just make sure pets/children don't find them and try to eat them. If you’re unsure of how large your problem is, hire a mold professional to inspect your home.

Fix any water leaks

Unfortunately, this might mean that fungal colonies are buried deep into the walls, windows and floorboards of your house. Overflowing gutters, broken roof tiles and poorly sealed doors are just some of the potential causes of structural mould damage. [4] At this point, it may be worth contacting a professional mould removal company to visit your house and advise you on what to do next. You can buy garbage disposal deodorizers from brands such as Plink, or DIY it by grinding a few thin strips of lemon, lime, or orange peel in the disposal.

why does my house smell musty

If so, you may need a new anode rod, which experts suggest you replace every five years, anyway. Just make sure to read your water heater’s warranty, because some of them require specific types of rods, otherwise the warranty could be voided. Other than that, if one part of your home—typically the bathroom—just smells like sewage, it might just be a dried up P-trap. Call your local pest control or wildlife removal company to help you identify the location and remove the source and clean up the area. If you have the DIY skills, you could try it on your own, though.

If you haven’t cleaned it in a while, you might find scraps of food and other gunk. Sometimes the tray comes out so you can just rinse it in the sink. Spread a layer of moisture-barrier material over the soil in crawl spaces under houses. You can use heavy roofing paper or polyethylene plastic film. In extreme cases, a fan or blower may be needed to move the humid air from under the building. So even if it’s the beginning of winter, it’s always a good idea to open the windows, even for a few hours a day.

The Fall of the House of Usher 1950 film Wikipedia

By the utter simplicity, by the nakedness of his designs, he arrested and overawed attention. For me, at least—in the circumstances then surrounding me—there arose out of the pure abstractions which the hypochondriac contrived to throw upon his canvas, an intensity of intolerable awe, no shadow of which felt I ever yet in the contemplation of the certainly glowing yet too concrete reveries of Fuseli. I learned, moreover, at intervals, and through broken and equivocal hints, another singular feature of his mental condition. I have said that the sole effect of my somewhat childish experiment of looking down within the tarn had been to deepen the first singular impression.

As he watches, the House of Usher splits in two and the fragments sink away into the lake. It is based on the short story The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. A century before, a young man visits a bleak-looking mansion in the English countryside where his friend Lord Roderick Usher lives with his sister Lady Madeline. They are both mysteriously ill and he discovers that they are suffering from a curse caused by their father which will lead to them both dying shortly, resulting in the downfall and end of the ancient family of Usher. The House of Usher is a 2006 American drama thriller film based on the 1839 Edgar Allan Poe short story "The Fall of the House of Usher". As if in the superhuman energy of his utterance there had been found the potency of a spell—the huge antique pannels to which the speaker pointed threw slowly back, upon the instant, their ponderous and ebony jaws.

Cast and characters

In 1979, Italian state channel RAI loosely adapted the short story, together with other Poe's works, in the series I racconti fantastici di Edgar Allan Poe.[33] It was directed by Daniele D'Anza, with Roderick Usher played by Philippe Leroy; music was composed by pop band Pooh. Roderick and Madeline are twins and the two share an incommunicable connection that critics conclude may be either incestuous or metaphysical,[7] as two individuals in an extra-sensory relationship embodying a single entity. To that end, Roderick's deteriorating condition speeds his own torment and eventual death. The narrator is impressed with Roderick's paintings and attempts to cheer him by reading with him and listening to his improvised musical compositions on the guitar. Roderick sings "The Haunted Palace", then tells the narrator that he believes the house he lives in to be alive, and that this sentience arises from the arrangement of the masonry and vegetation surrounding it. Further, Roderick believes that his fate is connected to the family mansion.

The House of Usher (2006 film)

The vault in which we placed it (and which had been so long unopened that our torches, half smothered in its oppressive atmosphere, gave us little opportunity for investigation) was small, damp, and entirely without means of admission for light; lying, at great depth, immediately beneath that portion of the building in which was my own sleeping apartment. It had been used, apparently, in remote feudal times, for the worst purposes of a donjon-keep, and in later days, as a place of deposit for powder, or some other highly combustible substance, as a portion of its floor, and the whole interior of a long archway through which we reached it, were carefully sheathed with copper. Its immense weight caused an unusually sharp grating sound, as it moved upon its hinges. It was thus that he spoke of the object of my visit, of his earnest desire to see me, and of the solace he expected me to afford him. He entered, at some length, into what he conceived to be the nature of his malady.

Much to the narrator’s surprise, Roderick claims that the Usher mansion is sentient and that it exercises some degree of control over its inhabitants. He declares that his illness is the product of “a constitutional and a family evil.” (The narrator later dismisses this as a cognitive symptom of Roderick’s “nervous affection.”) Roderick also reveals that Madeline, his twin sister and sole companion in the house, is gravely ill. According to Roderick, Madeline suffers from a cataleptic disease that has gradually limited her mobility.

A mere glimpse of the Usher mansion inspires in the narrator “an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart.” Upon entering the house, the reader as the narrator navigates through a series of dark passages lined with carvings, tapestries, and armorial trophies. Poe draws heavily on Gothic conventions, using omens and portents, heavy storms, hidden passageways, and shadows to set the reader on edge. The antique volume which I had taken up was the "Mad Trist" of Sir Launcelot Canning; but I had called it a favorite of Usher's more in sad jest than in earnest; for, in truth, there is little in its uncouth and unimaginative prolixity which could have had interest for the lofty and spiritual ideality of my friend.

Character descriptions

Some scholars speculated that Poe may have attached special importance to the fact that Roderick and Madeline are twins, noting that Poe previously investigated the phenomenon of the double in “Morella” (1835) and “William Wilson” (1839). Other scholars pointed to the work as an embodiment of Poe’s doctrine of l’art pour l’art (“art for art’s sake”), which held that art needs no moral, political, or didactic justification. Whether the reader is trapped by the house or by its inhabitants is unclear. Poe uses the term house to describe both the physical structure and the family.

Episodes

The overarching narrative of The Fall of the House of Usher loosely follows Poe's 1839 short story of the same name, with Roderick recounting his decades-spanning tale to Auggie inside his decrepit childhood home. Throughout the evening, Roderick is tortured by visions of his dead children—who appear to him as he relays the gruesome ways in which each of them met their end—while banging sounds that he says are coming from his twin sister, Fortunato COO Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell), can be heard emanating from the home's basement. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is an 1839 short story by Edgar Allan Poe ( ), a pioneer of the short story and a writer who arguably unleashed the full psychological potential of the Gothic horror genre. The story concerns the narrator’s visit to a strange mansion owned by his childhood friend, who is behaving increasingly oddly as he and his twin sister dwell within the ‘melancholy’ atmosphere of the house. Having deposited our mournful burden upon tressels within this region of horror, we partially turned aside the yet unscrewed lid of the coffin, and looked upon the face of the tenant.

The writer spoke of acute bodily illness—of a mental disorder which oppressed him, and of an earnest desire to see me, as his best, and indeed his only personal friend, with a view of attempting, by the cheerfulness of my society, some alleviation of his malady. It was the manner in which all this, and much more, was said—it was the apparent heart that went with his request—which allowed me no room for hesitation; and I accordingly obeyed forthwith what I still considered a very singular summons. Might we then interpret Roderick as a symbol of the conscious mind – struggling to conceal some dark ‘secret’ and make himself presentable to his friend, the narrator – and Madeline as a symbol of the unconscious? Note how Madeline is barely seen for much of the story, and the second time she appears she is literally buried (repressed?) within the vault. Within a few hours of the narrator’s arrival, Roderick begins to share some of his theories about his family.

In this there was much that reminded me of the specious totality of old woodwork which has rotted for years in some neglected vault, with no disturbance from the breath of the external air. Beyond this indication of extensive decay, however, the fabric gave little token of instability. Perhaps the eye of a scrutinizing observer might have discovered a barely perceptible fissure, which, extending from the roof of the building in front, made its way down the wall in a zigzag direction, until it became lost in the sullen waters of the tarn.

But the under surfaces of the huge masses of agitated vapor, as well as all terrestrial objects immediately around us, were glowing in the unnatural light of a faintly luminous and distinctly visible gaseous exhalation which hung about and enshrouded the mansion. I well remember that suggestions arising from this ballad led us into a train of thought wherein there became manifest an opinion of Usher's which I mention not so much on account of its novelty (for other men[1] have thought thus) as on account of the pertinacity with which he maintained it. This opinion, in its general form, was that of the sentience of all vegetable things.

With a moan, she falls on her brother, and, by the time they hit the floor, both Roderick and Madeline are dead. Outside, he looks back just in time to see the house split in two and collapse. We're a fan driven encyclopedia run and maintained by people just like you!

Created by fans, for fans, The Fall of the House of Usher Wiki is dedicated to building a comprehensive and informative resource about the Netflix original horror limited series The Fall of the House of Usher. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way,” Carla Gugino told Netflix during production. “It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul.” In the series, Gugino portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a — let’s just say — very famous Poe character.

It was, however, the only book immediately at hand; and I indulged a vague hope that the excitement which now agitated the hypochondriac, might find relief (for the history of mental disorder is full of similar anomalies) even in the extremeness of the folly which I should read. Could I have judged, indeed, by the wild, overstrained air of vivacity with which he hearkened, or apparently harkened, to the words of the tale, I might well have congratulated myself upon the success of my design. A servant in waiting took my horse, and I entered the Gothic archway of the hall. A valet, of stealthy step, thence conducted me, in silence, through many dark and intricate passages in my progress to the studio of his master.

For instance, it has sometimes been suggested that Roderick’s relationship with Madeline echoes Poe’s own relationship with his young wife (who was also his cousin), Virginia, who fell ill, as Madeline has. But Virginia did not fall ill until after Poe had written ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’. The Fall of the House of Usher, supernatural horror story by Edgar Allan Poe, published in Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine in 1839 and issued in Poe’s Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque (1840).

There can be no doubt that the consciousness of the rapid increase of my superstition—for why should I not so term it? Such, I have long known, is the paradoxical law of all sentiments having terror as a basis. And it might have been for this reason only, that, when I again uplifted my eyes to the house itself, from its image in the pool, there grew in my mind a strange fancy—a fancy so ridiculous, indeed, that I but mention it to show the vivid force of the sensations which oppressed me. Inspired by the work of Edgar Allan Poe, House of Usher traces the downfall of the uber-wealthy Usher family and their corrupt drug company, Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. The story centers on Usher family patriarch and Fortunato CEO Roderick (Bruce Greenwood), who, as the show begins, calls up his longtime rival, assistant U.S. attorney C. Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly), to come hear his confession following the deaths of all six of his adult children (by five different mothers)—Frederick (Henry Thomas), Tamerlane (Samantha Sloyan), Victorine (T'Nia Miller), Napoleon (Rahul Kohli), Camille (Kate Siegel), and Prospero (Sauriyan Sapkota)—in the span of a week.

Under the watchful eye of the caretaker, Nurse Thatcher (Beth Grant), Jill appears to be haunted by Maddy's ghost. And now, some days of bitter grief having elapsed, an observable change came over the features of the mental disorder of my friend. He roamed from chamber to chamber with hurried, unequal, and objectless step. The pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue—but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out. The once occasional huskiness of his tone was heard no more; and a tremulous quaver, as if of extreme terror, habitually characterized his utterance. There were times, indeed, when I thought his unceasingly agitated mind was laboring with some oppressive secret, to divulge which he struggled for the necessary courage.

At times, again, I was obliged to resolve all into the mere inexplicable vagaries of madness; for I beheld him gazing upon vacancy for long hours, in an attitude of the profoundest attention, as if listening to some imaginary sound. I felt creeping upon me, by slow yet certain degrees, the wild influence of his own fantastic yet impressive superstitions. Loosely based on various works by 19th-century author Edgar Allan Poe (most prominently the eponymous 1840 short story), the series adapts otherwise unrelated stories and characters by Poe into a single nonlinear narrative set from 1953 to 2023.

The writers and critics of Poe’s day rejected many of that movement’s core tenets, including its emphasis on the emotions and the experience of the sublime. Accordingly, commentaries on social injustice, morality, and utilitarianism proliferated in the mid-19th century. Poe conceived of his writing as a response to the literary conventions of this period.

It was a mystery all insoluble; nor could I grapple with the shadowy fancies that crowded upon me as I pondered. I was forced to fall back upon the unsatisfactory conclusion that while, beyond doubt, there are combinations of very simple natural objects which have the power of thus affecting us, still the analysis of this power lies among considerations beyond our depth. As Roderick nears the conclusion of his story, which jumps back and forth between his early years working at Fortunato and the events that led up to each of his children's deaths, he finally arrives at the fateful night that changed everything, New Year's Eve of 1979. House of Usher (also known as The Fall of the House of Usher) is a 1960 American gothic horror film directed by Roger Corman and written by Richard Matheson from the 1839 short story "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe. The film was the first of eight Corman/Poe feature films and stars Vincent Price, Myrna Fahey, Mark Damon and Harry Ellerbe.

But evil things, in robes of sorrow,Assailed the monarch's high estate;(Ah, let us mourn, for never morrowShall dawn upon him, desolate!) And, round about his home, the gloryThat blushed and bloomedIs but a dim-remembered storyOf the old time entombed. In the greenest of our valleys,By good angels tenanted,Once a fair and stately palace—Radiant palace—reared its head.In the monarch Thought's dominion—It stood there! In the manner of my friend I was at once struck with an incoherence—an inconsistency; and I soon found this to arise from a series of feeble and futile struggles to overcome an habitual trepidancy, an excessive nervous agitation. For something of this nature I had indeed been prepared, no less by his letter than by reminiscences of certain boyish traits, and by conclusions deduced from his peculiar physical conformation and temperament. Tamerlane Usher is the second oldest of the Usher heirs, and despite being the most suited of her siblings to run Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, she instead seeks to step out of her father's shadow.

Episode Guide

It recounts both the rise to power of Roderick Usher, the powerful CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company and his sister Madeline Usher, the firm's genius COO, and the events leading to the deaths of all six of Roderick’s children. It stars an ensemble cast led by Carla Gugino as a mysterious woman plaguing the Ushers, Bruce Greenwood as an elderly Roderick and Mary McDonnell as an elderly Madeline. I could not help thinking of the wild ritual of this work, and of its probable influence upon the hypochondriac, when, one evening, having informed me abruptly that the lady Madeline was no more, he stated his intention of preserving her corpse for a fortnight (previously to its final interment) in one of the numerous vaults within the main walls of the building.

On the one hand, the house itself appears to be actually sentient, just as Roderick claims. Its windows are described as “eye-like,” and its interior is compared to a living body. On the other hand, there are plenty of strange things about the Usher family. For one, “the entire family lay in the direct line of descent,” meaning that only one son from each generation survived and reproduced. Poe implies incestuous relations sustained the genetic line and that Roderick and Madeline are the products of extensive intermarriage within the Usher family. At Roderick’s words, the door bursts open, revealing Madeline all in white with blood on her robes.

“There is a fantastical supernatural element to the story, and she is the manifestation of that,” she added. As these first look photos and posters reveal, Verna isn’t one to be played with. “You could say she’s the executor of fate or the executor of karma,” said Gugino. The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe. Its main character, William Stendahl, builds a house based on the specifications from Poe's story to murder his enemies.

A striking similitude between the brother and sister now first arrested my attention; and Usher, divining, perhaps, my thoughts, murmured out some few words from which I learned that the deceased and himself had been twins, and that sympathies of a scarcely intelligible nature had always existed between them. Our glances, however, rested not long upon the dead—for we could not regard her unawed. The disease which had thus entombed the lady in the maturity of youth, had left, as usual in all maladies of a strictly cataleptical character, the mockery of a faint blush upon the bosom and the face, and that suspiciously lingering smile upon the lip which is so terrible in death. We replaced and screwed down the lid, and having secured the door of iron, made our way, with toil, into the scarcely less gloomy apartments of the upper portion of the house. It was, especially, upon retiring to bed late in the night of the seventh or eighth day after the placing of the lady Madeline within the donjon, that I experienced the full power of such feelings.

I know not how it was—but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit. I say insufferable; for the feeling was unrelieved by any of that half-pleasurable, because poetic, sentiment, with which the mind usually receives even the sternest natural images of the desolate or terrible. There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart—an unredeemed dreariness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime. What was it—I paused to think—what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher?
